There is a big difference between breaking a bad habit and breaking an addiction. For some, treating the gaming addiction may be easier for some than others. What makes gaming addiction different from many other addictions is that it is hard for the addict to recognize the problem and simplify that it is only a game and they could be doing much worse. They justify the fact that the gaming does not cause them to spend frivolous money, although many do run their credit cards to and past the limits to finance the pay for play sites and they believe the gaming causes no physical damage to them.
Of course the best way to break a bad habit is to replace it with a good one but addiction is more than a habit, it is a habit that blazes out of control and continues to burn. Gaming addiction has and very well can destroy marriages and careers. The first step in fixing this mayhem is admitting there is a problem and once that has happened, one can move on step by step. This condition can not be underestimated to any degree. It is definitely as powerful as an addiction to heroin is. This addiction is classified as a psychiatric disorder and treatment is covered by most health insurance companies.
Habits are what are present prior to a problem getting out of control and becoming an addiction. And most of the people who find themselves a classified addict are involved in online games involving role-playing and never-ending quests games like World of Warcraft, Everquest, or Final Fantasy. However, while this is still a habit and before it manifests itself to a new level, parents especially need to remove any gaming devices from rooms such as a bedroom or a room that is isolated from other people. Learn how to work the parental locks and controls on all of your home electronics. Watch for behaviors that send out warning signals such as aggressive behavior, isolation, and decline in performance at school or work. They are all signs that a loved one might be surpassing a habit and running into the arms of addiction.
Education is the best way to break the habit that eventually leads to addiction. Educating parents, spouses, children, and teens is where this has to begin as prevention. The government can work on making some changes to the regulations of the manufacturers of the games and the gaming devices, especially the ones that appear to be the most harmful such as World of Warcraft, Everquest, or Final Fantasy. If you see that a loved one is becoming particularly engrossed in video gaming then try to divert their activities in another direction. Make whatever attempt that you can to break the habit before it becomes an addiction.
There is a definite line between being enthusiastic about something and being dependent. It is much easier for parents to attempt to control this with children than it is with adults but parents can use the gaming as an incentive or an award where the kids can earn time to use them, do not allow your children to play for more than an hour or so at a time without taking a break, don’t be afraid to set limits and tell the kids that they can not play games until after homework and dinner, or maybe only allow them to play on weekends.
